Chapter 12 Undercurrents
Chapter 12 Undercurrents
"You're insane!"
Lu Yiming cursed inwardly, looking at the round-faced, bearded man in front of him, feeling utterly absurd.
What kind of condition is that?
I'm talking to you about business, but you're talking to me about personal matters?
His mind raced; this guy was definitely Chen Ruoyan's suitor!
I guess they heard Mia's big mouth's revelations and found out that Ruoyan and I were getting close, so they used their position to make trouble for me, hoping to make me back down.
Haha, you're overthinking it.
My friendship with Chen Ruoyan was pure and innocent; we were childhood sweethearts.
"I'm here to solve a case, not to negotiate."
Lu Yiming raised his head, his eyes filled with hostility.
The bearded man shook his head and said, "Little guy, don't be too impulsive."
He pulled a business card holder from his leather jacket, took out a slip of paper with a handwritten phone number on it.
"This is a chance to join the homicide unit. Do you just want to stay in the patrol unit and be an auxiliary police officer for the rest of your life?"
Lu Yiming didn't say anything, simply relying on my merits from yesterday.
Becoming a full-fledged police officer is only a matter of time; there's absolutely no need to agree to such outrageous conditions.
Lu Yiming looked at the note the other party handed him, but did not take it.
What a load of rubbish "Leo Leo".
He deliberately reached out, but his wrist went limp when he touched the paper, and the note fell to the ground.
"Sorry, I don't think I really need it."
Leo looked down at the note on the ground, as if he had thought of something interesting.
He chuckled and patted Lu Yiming's shoulder with considerable force.
Lu Yiming endured the pain, not wanting the guy to see it.
"Little guy, you'll regret this."
Leo said with certainty, "You'll have to ask me for help one day."
"hehe."
Lu Yiming never expected that such a stupid villain would turn on him.
This person is really out of their mind.
Leo didn't say anything more and turned to walk towards the door.
As he reached the door, he suddenly stopped, bent down, and picked up the lunchbox next to him.
Lu Yiming was stunned. It was lunch that Chen Ruoyan had made. He had seen it before when he had lunch.
Watching Leo take the lunchbox, I don't know why, but I felt a sense of emptiness inside.
"Your memory isn't very good; you should eat more supplements to improve your brain function."
Lu Yiming was completely confused. "Who are you? You're the Tax Master? Why should I remember you?"
……
Meanwhile, at the Fremont Police Department building, in the Chief's office.
Marcus Hunt, the head of the homicide squad, stood in front of his desk, reporting to Gu Qiu with a somewhat grim expression.
"The newly discovered body in the suitcase had its face disfigured by sulfuric acid, just like the previous headless body, making it impossible to identify."
Gu Qiu placed her hands on the table, her face grim, clearly dissatisfied with the answer.
"What about the surveillance footage? Didn't the surveillance cameras capture the suspect?"
Marcus was somewhat embarrassed: "We've investigated everything. The surveillance cameras at those stations where the incident occurred have been broken for six months and haven't been fixed yet."
He has already put it very tactfully.
The municipal government approves a special maintenance fund every year, but this money goes through the mayor's office and the engineering specialist.
The equipment I bought was ridiculously expensive, but the quality was as bad as cheap knock-offs.
We spent a lot of money, and a lot of things broke down.
"Our current plan is to start with the identity of the deceased... but..." Marcus seemed hesitant to speak.
"Get to the point, Marcus. I don't have that much time."
Marcus scratched his head, looking troubled.
"The guys... are practically drained. They've been working overtime for over a week straight, and if they don't get paid for it soon, they're going to protest at the union..."
"Sigh," Gu Qiu sighed and leaned back in his chair. "The mayor's office is holding up the funding. They say it's for budget review."
Marcus was at his wits' end when suddenly a flash of inspiration struck him, and he thought of something.
"Chief, I'd like to transfer someone. A community service officer from the patrol unit."
"A young Chinese-American named Lu Yiming. The one who solved the case yesterday."
Gu Qiu had the report that Mike had sent her lying next to her.
The report portrays Lu Yiming as a lone warrior; those who know him would think he captured a serial killer, while those who don't would think he captured Osama bin Laden.
"You want him involved in the subway case?" Gu Qiu looked up, seemingly lost in thought.
"Hey, yeah! I feel like this kid has talent, he might be surprisingly effective."
The case of piecing together corpses can no longer be delayed.
I heard that the White House has called, and if the case isn't solved soon, Marcus will be replaced as the head of the homicide squad.
Gu Qiu remained silent for a moment, then picked up the report in his hand and looked at it again.
"He's not a formal police officer. I don't even need to issue a transfer order. You can just go and ask him for assistance. Why are you asking me?"
Marcus scratched his head sheepishly:
"If he really performs meritorious service, could he be promoted to police officer despite the usual procedures?"
Gu Qiu glanced at him with some surprise: "I didn't realize you were so good at valuing talent."
"But that's none of your business. Just focus on doing your job well."
Marcus was unsure whether this meant he had agreed or not.
"Someone has already taken care of this. Go back now."
"Wait." Just as Marcus was about to leave, Gu Qiu called out to him.
Gu Qiu took out an exquisite box from the drawer, opened it, and inside was a magnificent medal—a commendation medal.
"I almost forgot. You don't need to go and call anyone. There's a small award ceremony this afternoon."
Marcus was also stunned; he hadn't received many commendation medals in all his years as the head of the homicide squad.
"In China, this would be considered a third-class merit."
Gu Qiu sighed, "After the awarding ceremony, have him come to my office. I'd like to see him."
"Yes, sir!"
Marcus thought about it for a long time, and a question had been bothering him for a while.
"Chief... there's something I've been wondering about. Perhaps I've crossed a line..."
Gu Qiu glanced at him, her eyes playful: "You can ask, but I might not tell you."
Marcus scratched his head: "I feel like the federal government is paying too much attention to this subway case."
Furthermore, the news spread a bit too quickly… and given that the White House is paying so much attention, why hasn't the FBI taken full control?
"stop!"
Gu Qiu interrupted his question directly, making a shushing gesture.
"Get out. Your job is to solve cases, nothing more. Don't speculate about anything else. That's an order."
"Yes, sir!"
……
Lu Yiming walked out of the morgue in a daze.
I don't know why, even though I refused that inexplicable condition.
But there was something about it that made him very uncomfortable.
"How's it going? Any results?" Chen Ruoyan immediately ran over, her face full of concern.
But when she saw Lu Yiming looking distracted, worry immediately appeared on her face.
He subconsciously reached out and patted Lu Yiming's head, just like when they were children.
"It's okay, it's okay. It's alright if we don't find any clues. We'll take our time."
Lu Yiming looked at her, feeling a surge of annoyance, and couldn't help but ask:
"Did you put that Leo in there just now?"
Chen Ruoyan tilted her head, her eyes clear: "Yeah. How could you have gotten in without his help?"
"What do you talk about when you meet?"
Lu Yiming felt a pang of jealousy. "We didn't talk about much, just the case."
Chen Ruoyan frowned in surprise: "You wouldn't...?"
Before he could finish speaking, Lu Yiming's phone rang in his pocket.
"Hey, Lu? This is Marcus Hunter from the homicide unit!"
"Hello, sir."
Marcus's booming voice came from the other end of the phone: "Listen up! Wherever you are, drop everything you're doing!"
"I need you in the Fremont Police Department lobby right now!"
