Chapter 250 The Kingdom of Women
Chapter 250 The Kingdom of Women
Song Huan went to the kitchen to cook.
Lin Yue leaned back on the sofa and watched him busy inside through the half-open door.
The sound of chopping vegetables, tap tap tap, was steady and rhythmic.
The oil sizzled and crackled, releasing a delicious aroma.
She suddenly realized that this little house had never been so lively before.
She used to live alone; the kitchen was just for show, and the refrigerator only contained eggs and noodles.
Now the stove is full of spice bottles, there are a few more plates in the cupboard, and even the dishcloths are folded neatly.
She smiled and hugged the cushion to her chest.
The meal is ready.
Steamed sea bass, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, stir-fried greens, and a bowl of pork rib soup.
Song Huan placed the dishes on the table, set out the chopsticks, and served two bowls of rice.
Lin Yue didn't have much of an appetite, and her stomach was aching slightly.
But drawn by the aroma, I still sat down at the dining table.
She picked up a piece of fish, put it in her mouth, and found it tender, fresh, and perfectly salty.
I also picked up a piece of scrambled eggs with tomatoes. The sweet and sour flavors were just right, the eggs were cooked until tender, and the tomatoes were juicy.
She couldn't resist taking a few more bites.
"I wish I could eat this every day," she said casually.
Song Huan looked up, smiled, and said, "Where do you work? I can cook meals and bring them to you from now on."
Lin Yue paused for a moment.
Her face was a little stiff, and the smile was still on her lips, but she didn't move.
"Never mind, it's too much trouble for you." She lowered her head and used her chopsticks to stir the rice in her bowl.
"How could it be troublesome? I need to eat anyway, so what's the big deal about doing an extra job..."
She waved her hand.
"Forget it, let's not talk about this."
She picked up a piece of fish, put it in her mouth, and chewed.
Song Huan looked at her and didn't ask any more questions.
After dinner, Lin Yue sat on the sofa and watched TV.
The television was a small piece of furniture she just bought this month, placed on a cabinet. It's the most valuable piece of furniture in her small home.
Song Huan cleared away the dishes and chopsticks, stacked the plates, and carried them into the kitchen.
The TV was showing "Journey to the West," and it happened to be the episode about the Women's Kingdom.
The Queen of the Women's Kingdom stood before Tang Sanzang, tears welling in her eyes, and asked him, "You say you are free from worldly desires, yet you keep your eyes tightly shut. If you open your eyes and look at me, I won't believe your eyes are empty."
Tang Sanzang had his eyes closed, and his forehead was covered in sweat.
He didn't dare look at her.
Lin Yue grew angrier the more she looked.
"How could that scoundrel Tang Sanzang abandon the Queen of the Women's Kingdom and leave?"
Song Huan poked her head out of the kitchen, holding a dishcloth in her hand.
"He is a monk and should not be near women."
"What's wrong with being a monk? Can't monks have feelings?"
Lin Yue's voice rose a half octave, "He was clearly moved too. Look at him, sweating profusely, barely daring to open his eyes. If he were truly devoted to Buddhism, why wouldn't he dare look at her?"
Song Huan wiped her hands, walked over, and stood next to the sofa.
"He is going to the Western Paradise to obtain Buddhist scriptures; that is his mission. He cannot stay."
Lin Yue looked up at him. "Mission? What about the Queen of the Women's Kingdom? She waited so long, finally finding someone she liked. And then he just left. What will she do, left alone in that empty palace?"
Song Huan didn't say anything.
Lin Yue turned back and stared at the television.
The Queen of the Women's Kingdom stood on the city wall, watching Tang Sanzang's figure walk further and further away.
Tears streamed down her face, but she didn't chase after him.
She just stood there and watched him walk away.
"If it were me..." Lin Yue suddenly spoke up, "If it were me, I wouldn't let him go."
Song Huan looked at her.
She stared at the TV, her eyes shining, as if something was burning inside them.
"I'll chase after him, grab his hand, and ask him what he really wants. If he says he's going to fetch the scriptures, I'll ask him, 'And after you get them? You go back to your Tang Dynasty, I'll go back to my Women's Kingdom, and we'll never see each other again in this lifetime?'"
She paused for a moment.
"If he dares to nod, I'll slap him across the face."
Song Huan's lips twitched slightly. "And then?"
"Then I left. I walked faster and farther than him, so that he couldn't even see my back."
She paused, then her voice suddenly softened, "I will absolutely not stand still and wait for him to turn around."
Song Huan looked at her without saying anything.
On TV, the Queen of the Women's Kingdom was still standing on the city wall, while Tang Sanzang's figure had already disappeared.
She stood there, like a tree bent over by the wind.
Lin Yue looked away, lowered her head, and drew circles on her knee with her fingers.
Song Huan walked over and turned off the TV. "Stop watching, you should rest for a while."
Lin Yue didn't say anything.
He sat down next to her, with a cushion separating them.
A gust of wind blew, causing the curtains to flutter. She leaned on his shoulder without saying a word.
He didn't move.
It was dark outside the window, the streetlights were on, and a dim yellow light shone in through the window, falling on a small patch of the floor.
That evening, Song Huan returned to her dormitory.
Pushing open the door, Li Yang was lying on the top bunk scrolling through his phone, Zhang Li was sitting in a chair eating sunflower seeds, and Wang Gang was leaning against the headboard reading a book.
The three people looked up at him at the same time.
"Where did you go today?" Li Yang asked, leaning down from the top bunk.
Song Huan changed her shoes, walked to her bed, and sat down. "I have something to do."
Zhang Li spat out the sunflower seed shells. "Something came up? You haven't been seen all day, and you have something to do?"
Wang Gang looked up from his book and adjusted his glasses.
"You didn't go on a date with that girl, did you?"
Song Huan blushed.
Li Yang's eyes lit up. "Holy crap, really? Is she the girl who took you away at the food street the other day?"
Song Huan nodded, then shook her head. "No date. I just... stayed at her house for a while."
The dormitory was silent for a second.
Then it exploded.
"You stayed at her house for a while?" Li Yang's voice rose an octave.
"Song Huan, you're amazing! Things are progressing so fast?"
Zhang Li threw the sunflower seed shells into the trash can, leaned closer, and asked, "How does she look? Isn't she really pretty? I heard from the dorm next door that the girl had a really good figure that day, even prettier than Su Wanqing."
Wang Gang put down his book and waited for his answer.
Song Huan scratched his head. "We haven't talked yet. She told me to pursue her."
The three of them exchanged a glance.
Li Yang shook his head. "I'm truly impressed. What kind of luck does this guy have?"
Zhang Li sighed, "Su Wanqing just left, and now an even prettier one has appeared. God is really unfair."
Although Wang Gang didn't say anything, he looked extremely anxious.
Li Yang jumped off the bed, patted his pants, and said, "Let's go to a karaoke bar. Let's relax."
Zhang Li also stood up. "Which one?"
"That place next to the school has lots of girls, and I heard there's a super pretty student there!"
Wang Gang put the book under his pillow and got out of bed.
The three of them reached the door, and Li Yang turned back to look at Song Huan. "Aren't you going?"
Zhang Li pulled him back, "Hey, he's about to have a girlfriend, why are you taking him there?"
The three of them walked away laughing and joking, their footsteps fading into the distance down the corridor.
Song Huan sat on the edge of the bed when her phone vibrated.
Lin Yue sent a message: "Have you arrived at the dorm yet?"
He replied, "We've arrived."
She sent another message, "Okay, I'm going to work now. I might not have time to reply to your messages tonight."
He paused for a moment, then asked, "Aren't you going to rest a little longer?"
She replied quickly, "No, that won't work. I've taken too much leave lately, and the supervisor won't approve any more."
He stared at the line of text and frowned.
He didn't know what shift she was on, and the supervisor was so inhumane, making her work the night shift even when she wasn't feeling well.
He thought for a moment, then typed a message: "When you come back tomorrow morning, you must go to sleep and stop watching TV."
She sent an emoji: a rabbit sitting obediently with its ears perked up.
He smiled and placed his phone next to his pillow.
A cool breeze is blowing in from outside the window.
He picked up his phone and glanced at the emoji she had sent.
The rabbit is very well-behaved, and so is she.
If I were Tang Sanzang, I probably wouldn't be willing to leave her either.
Is there a way to have it all in this world?
I will not betray the Buddha, nor will I betray you.
